Hyderabad: The Praja Rajyam party launched by Mr K. Chiranjeevi, on September 17, 2008 was formally merged into the Congress on Monday. The Election Commission issued a communication to this effect. The Praja Rajyam chief, Mr Chiranjeevi, received the communication from the EC in the evening. Talking to this newspaper, Mr Chiranjeevi said that in the communication, both the name of PR and its election symbol have been frozen to be allotted to other parties in the state.
With the merger of the PR, the strength of the Congress has risen to 173 from 155. However, the status of the PR Allagadda MLA, Ms Sobha Nagireddy, continues to be confusing to all including herself. According to Mr Chiranjeevi, Ms Sobha will be treated as an Independent MLA since she has not signed the merger proposal of the PR Legislature Party with the Congress. However, another senior party functionary says the merger of the whole party, including the Legislature Party consisting of 18 MLAs with the Congress means Ms Sobha will also be treated as a Congress MLA from Tuesday.
Mr Chiranjeevi said after the return of Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, from a foreign trip, he will formally discuss with him about organising a suitable public meeting for the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, and Mr Rahul Gandhi to attend. “A final decision on the merger meeting will be known after June 20,” he said.
