Begumpet-Fatehnagar link road fate hangs in balance

HYDERABAD: With several hitches and delays in acquiring properties for the Begumpet-Fatehnagar link road, project contractor M Venkat Rao & Company has decided to withdraw from the works. The contractor has served a notice on the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for termination of contract and is giving finishing touches to the completed portion of the link road.

Stung by the development, the GHMC has now sought some more time to solve the land acquisition problem and is planning to at least open the link road from Begumpet to Balkampet by removing 35 huts at Indira Gandhipuram.

The link road, which is partly bridge between Begumpet-Fatehnagar-Balkampet, was taken up by the corporation in October 2007 at a cost of Rs 22 crore. Once completed, this road would benefit commuters heading towards Fatehnagar or Balkampet either from Khairatabad or Secunderabad via S P Road and Greenlands. Also, the link road would not only reduce traffic on Greenlands and Ameerpet roads, but also reduce distance by 3 to 4 km.

As per the original plan, the contractor was supposed to complete the works within 15 months. However, the contract was extended from time to time on the request of the GHMC as it faced problems in taking over properties for road laying.

The link road starts at Begumpet bridge near Hanuman temple and goes via Indira Gandhipuram and connects Fatehnagar on one end. The same link road also connects Balkampet by splitting at Indira Gandhipuram via Suprabhatnagar at the other end. To connect this, a road under bridge (RUB) is being constructed across the railway line at a cost of Rs 13.5 crore by the South Central Railway which is nearing completion.

For the link road, nearly 170 properties have to be acquired at places like Indira Gandhipuram, Dhanyalagutta, Begumpet bridge and other places.

Officials said land acquisition notification was issued for taking over 51 properties, including 12 properties at Begumpet bridge, five at Suprabhathnagar, 44 at Dhanyalagutta and Balkampet. While some land owners agreed to take compensation, some owners have asked for pucca houses apart from land compensation.

To avoid acquiring 120 properties at Indira Gandhipuram towards Fatehnagar, the GHMC has proposed an alternate route, but the cost of the project would escalate by Rs five crore and the proposal is now under consideration of the corporation.

When contacted, GHMC engineer-in-chief P Panguranga Rao said they would first complete the Balkampet-Begumpet link by removing 35 huts for which occupants had given consent. He said the rest of the portion would also be completed as land acquisition at some places has already begun.
